Working 9 to 5

As a recent graduate (well I say recent, almost a year ago now.....- Scary), adjusting from student days filled with sleeping, netflix, going out and popping to uni now and then to working every week 9-5 is a weird transition.

I almost feel like now I am a grown up....almost! I have a routine and a regular pay check, scary adult stuff, I still don't feel old enough for. I worked in retail  part time whilst I was a student so never really had that routine of regular shifts.  Now I am working in a full time job, working the same days every week.

So how are we ex students meant do make this bizarre transition?

After three months in grown up world, I think I've kinda got the hang of this work malarkey.

Keep your mornings relaxed and prepare your work outfit the night before. There's nothing worse than starting your day stressed and rushing about.  I like to sit down and have a nice breakfast with a cup of tea and watch the news, while I leisurely  put on my make up.

Make the most of your lunch break. Get out the office and sit in the sun, read a book or meet a friend for lunch.  Break is your free time to unwind so make the most of your hour.

Do not clock watch. There's nothing worse than a day dragging by and then you look at your watch and it's only 10am. Always keep busy and find something to do, the day flies by and before you know it, the working day is over

Don't waste your evenings. If you finish at 5 then you have 5 hours to kill in the evening . Go for a walk, go to the gym, the cinema , have a cheeky cocktail or relax with a movie night. Don't make work your whole life.

Plan something to look forward to. In uni there would always be easter break or reading weeks to count down to have a little relax.  In real world you don't get any of those luxuries.  So plan something to look forward to, a trip to London or a holiday or just a meet up with a friend.

Lastly, enjoy it! Starting full time work can be exciting ,a new chapter in your life. New skills to learn, people to meet and new opportunities. Embrace that grown up working gal inside you!

Please let me know your tips to adjusting to working life.

  2. Another amazingly written post! Your routine sounds great! With me being self employed its so hard to stick to a routine, going to bed at stupid o clock due to watching just one more episode of something and then getting up tired and late hehe THEN instead of working 9-5, I work 11-8 some days it's so hard to stop working and leave the office when the office is in your home but I do love my job so pros and cons isn't it! Hehe x

  3. Thanks Soph! yeah I bet, always so tempting to watch "one" more episode which results in two or three more haha.
